FIELD METHOD

Four moves.

The method keeps a trail open to revision while giving the eye a concrete task.

1. Describe

Name form, material, surface, condition and visible action without starting from the object’s famous title.

2. Locate

Separate intended ancient setting, archaeological findspot, collection history and present display.

3. Compare

Use a second object to test whether the first feature is typical, exceptional or simply easier to see.

4. Qualify

Read the label and catalogue, retain uncertainty and state which technical evidence would strengthen the claim.
